How Low Can The Dollar Go?

October 19, 2009

Some experts think the U.S. dollar's value has fallen as far as it can go, but Peter Coy argues that the same overconfidence that burned real estate investors may be blinding speculators to the real dangers of a dollar bust. A weak dollar has helped exporters compete abroad in the short term, but if the dollar sinks much lower it could prick the bubble of confidence that has historically protected the greenback, he notes. If that happens, he argues, bank closures, trade wars and inflation are all but assured. BusinessWeek (10/14)
