Extending Unemployment Benefits -- $100 Billion

December 3, 2009

When you total the costs of efforts in Congress to extend unemployment benefits beyond the basic 26-week unemployment insurance package provided under permanent law the potential cost is $100 billion. That includes approximately $85 billion to continue emergency benefits through 2010 for the long-term unemployed, out of work for more than six months, plus an estimated $15 billion to continue subsidies to help pay health insurance premiums.

The White House estimate of the cost for 2010 before the last round of extended benefits exceeded $140 billion for fiscal 2010, which began in October.
