Despite a few distractions, the Utah Legislature’s 2010 General Session was a huge success as lawmakers wrestled with huge deficits in state budgets and extraordinary pressures from education, and many in the Executive Branch to save their programs at any cost. We applaud our dedicated legislators for their courage in the face of such pressure to make the right decisions and hold the line on taxes and make the necessary cuts to balance a very difficult budget.
The main objective for UMA in the 2010 session was to help legislators avoid actions that would further exacerbate problems with the economy and push manufacturers further into the worst recession in decades. Mission accomplished.
UMA worked with legislators to do the things necessary to enhance the business climate in Utah and send a message to investors that Utah is still the number one state in the nation for business investment and growth. In a meeting of business interests during the session with Governor Herbert UMA President Tom Bingham was asked by the Governor, “What is the big issue for manufacturers in Utah?” Bingham’s response was clear and concise, “Governor, what we need most in manufacturing from your office and government in general is ‘certainty’. We need to know that the conditions we see and upon which our investments are based, will not change after the investment is in place. We need to know you are not going to hide the ball on us.” The Governor responded, “Got it.”
The following is the “Final Legislative Report” from the 2010 General Session for key issues of interest to UMA.
