Axis Architects wins 2010 AIA awards

Utah Valley University Noorda Theater
The design for Utah Valley University’s Noorda Theatre provided flexibility through innovation. The 45 foot high theater allows a myriad of options for audience seating, scene and stage layout. Instead of a traditional catwalk for lighting, the team designed a state-of-the-art walk-on ceiling grid made of woven stainless steel cables. This system allows technicians to adjust lights rapidly and safely above the 17 foot high “net”, eliminating the potential for falls. The project also included an extensive renovation to the existing theater area, involving a white-box theater, green rooms and theater scenery shops.

H House
H House is a private residence located on a prominent site on the east bench of salt lake city. One of the challenges of this project was to allow for the views to the west, while protecting the house from the afternoon sun. A large overhanging shading device provides shade and gives a distinctive character to the house. The volumes of the house follow the slope of the terrain and reinforce the integration of the house into its environment.

Axis also won the people’s choice award given by the AIA and Salt Lake City Tribune. In all, Axis won 3 of the total 6 design awards. Thank you for being a part of our success.
