WSU to Host Recycling and Sustainability Summit

KEYNOTE ADDRESSS: GOVERNOR GARY R. HERBERT
"Balance economic growth and sustainability"
We can show the way for the nation today with responsible planning and balanced growth, while keeping the environment and sustainability as an integral part of our business plans.

OGDEN, Utah – Utah Gov. Gary R. Herbert will be the keynote speaker for the second annual Intermountain Recycling & Sustainability Summit, March 4 at Weber State University’s Ogden campus.

The summit will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Building. Gov. Herbert’s address, “Balancing Economic Growth and Sustainability,” will be at 9 a.m. in Shepherd Union Ballroom A. Ogden Mayor Matthew Godfrey will address the summit at 1 p.m. The day will conclude with an open meeting of the Utah Recycling Alliance (URA).

The goal of the summit is to educate the public regarding recycling and sustainability issues, exchange ideas on best practices, and promote innovative ways Intermountain West communities are reducing their carbon footprint.

Building on last year’s summit, event organizers have scheduled a series of presentations and breakout sessions, allowing attendees to choose between discussions on recycling and sustainability. Glass recycling, renewable energy programs, and environmental issues associated with recycling pharmaceutical products are just some of the topics planned for breakout sessions.

The event also will feature information booths staffed by agencies and companies involved with recycling and sustainability efforts, such as Momentum Recycling, Rocky Mountain Recycling, Dixie Recycling, Wheeler Machinery, etc.

The general public is welcome to attend the summit, which is aimed at representatives from Intermountain West communities, sustainability and recycling professionals, lawmakers and key stakeholders in solid waste management, environmental quality, recycling and alternative energy.

Admission is $15 for individuals and $100 for sponsoring businesses (which includes three registrations). The cost of admission includes breakfast and lunch, as well as a $15 discount toward annual membership in the Utah Recycling Alliance. Display booths for the conference are available for $250 each for businesses and $50 for government agencies or non-profit organizations.

Students may attend the summit free of charge but need to register in advance. Students interested in lunch will need to pay $10 in advance.

The Platinum Sponsor is the WSU MBA Program's Certificate in Environmental Sustainability for Business. Other sponsors include the Utah Recycling Alliance, WSU Continuing Education,
WSU Environmental Club, WSU Environmental Issues Committee and Weber State University Student Association Arts & Lectures.
