“UMA ON THE HILL”
BIG WIN FOR UMA ON DEQ BILL
Today in the House Energy, Natural Resources and Environment Standing Committee, UMA came one step closer to full success in the revamping the outdated policy boards at the Utah Department of Environmental Quality. Following presentations by bill sponsor of SB-21, Department of Environmental Quality Boards Revisions, Senator Margaret Dayton and UMA Air Quality Advisory Committee chairman Jim Holtkamp, the legislative committee heard a barrage of baseless arguments and accusations from a host of environmental organizations opposing the changes proposed to improve the permitting process of the policy boards. It is amazing to me that these organizations have never learned that if you impugn the integrity of legislators you should not expect them to support your position. Several who testified did just that, and then they were surprised and incensed when the committee voted 9-1 to pass the bill from the committee to the floor of the House with a favorable recommendation. Just one more vote to clear the legislature and then to the Governor for his signature, which he is sure to affix.
