FLOOR ACTION LIKELY THIS YEAR ON DERIVATIVES

November 5, 2009

Work is underway in the House to blend the House Agriculture Committee and House Financial Services Committee derivatives regulation bills. Based on comments from House Financial Services Committee Chair Barney Frank (D-MA), a comprehensive financial services reform package, including the derivatives reform section, could be on the House floor after the Thanksgiving recess. While many of the members of the two House Committees are familiar with—and supportive of—the need for end-users to have access to customized derivatives to manage risk, many legislators outside of these committees are not. Over the next few weeks, the NAM will be scheduling meetings with a number of offices to talk about the end-users and their unique use of over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives.
