NAM OPPOSES HOUSE HEALTH CARE BILL; SENDS KEY VOTE LETTER

November 5, 2009

With floor votes expected as early as this weekend on H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, the NAM on November 5 notified all House offices of manufacturers' opposition to the bill. “Our members support proposals that reduce soaring health costs, improve the efficiency of the current system and enhance the quality of care,” the NAM said in its Key Vote letter. “Unfortunately, this legislation, as drafted, falls far short of these goals, driving up manufacturers' health care costs and forcing many companies to consider abandoning the generous benefits they currently offer.” Specifically, the NAM cited opposition to the bill's employer mandates, public health insurance option, weakening of the ERISA law and revenue raisers, including a 5.4-percent surtax on individuals and small businesses making more than $500,000 per year. Details: Jeri G. Kubicki, (202) 637-3127; Dena Battle, (202) 637-3079.
