Senate Health Care Debate Commences

December 4, 2009

Senators returned from their Thanksgiving recess to begin work on Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-NV) health care bill, the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act. The opening days of debate were dominated by partisan wrangling, primarily over timing of votes on amendments and procedural matters. An agreement was reached on December 2 to begin amending the bill, and votes began December 3 and are expected to continue for a number of weeks. The NAM is monitoring the debate closely and will continue to weigh in on amendments that affect manufacturers.
